Who we are

Many kids and their families are in survival mode in our county. Basic needs must be met before these kids can thrive and grow and develop, not just physically, but intellectually, emotionally and spiritually.

We want to start by getting these kids food. Food, so they can not just survive, but thrive.

We don't want to stop with food. Food is just a start. We want to feed them care, love, belonging, and support. Not just dropping off food, but providing a feast of ongoing relationships that have potential to be transformative.

This is our community. Every member of it MATTERS. These are our people. Let's feed them. Let's feed them more than food.

what we do

Weekend Backpacks

For many Cleveland County children, the breakfast and lunch they eat at school is the only food they can depend on each day. We want to make sure that they still have nutritious food every weekend when those school meals are not available. Social workers at individual schools identify which children are in need of weekend backpacks. Each school year, people from our community sign up to donate the same food item once a month to fill up these backpacks and give our kids dependable food on the weekends.

See the list of foods and sign up to be a monthly donor HERE.

School Break Box Delivery

Many organizations provide weekend backpacks to kids, which is wonderful. But something Feeding Kids alone specializes in is larger food box deliveries directly to students’ homes over school breaks and summer break.

When students are away from school for extended periods of time, those dependable school meals go away as well. FKCC volunteers work hard to collect, package and deliver food directly to kids to keep their bellies full over those breaks. This is one of our favorite activities because we actually get to visit our families and spend time showing these kids that they matter to their community. All kinds of groups and organizations host food drives to provide food for these boxes.

Community Table Thanksgiving Meal

Beginning in 2016, FKCC and many community partners join together to host an annual Thanksgiving meal. This meal is a community effort aiming to bring all areas of the Shelby community together in unity for a shared meal and fellowship. The meal takes place in three locations simultaneously the Wednesday before Thanksgiving in some of our community's high need areas.

4 Locations, 300 volunteers, over 900 meals served

Summer Lunch Program

This is a federally funded nutrition program that only reaches hungry kids if groups like us facilitate the meals. School cafeterias cook up the food. We hand it out to kids. It's that simple. We serve them lunches, sing silly songs, play games, read books, blow bubbles and lots of other fun things.  But most importantly, we be build genuine relationships week after week with these kids and their parents.
